Are you curious about physical mediumship and the phenomena surrounding spirit communication?

Then look no further.

In this blog post, we will explore the 14 types of physical mediumship phenomena spirit people uses to communicate and let us know they are still with us.

Common signs of physical mediumship phenomena are transfiguration, ectoplasm, materialization, apparitions, apports, levitation, table tipping, direct voice, scent phenomena, sound phenomena, spirit rapping and tapping, spirit lights, supernatural healing, and changes in room temperature.

14 types of Physical Mediumship manifestations

Spirit communicators exhibit their remarkable ability to connect with loved ones through physical mediumship, where they manipulate the medium’s body and manifest diverse physical phenomena. These phenomena is not just captivating, but it also serve as compelling evidence supporting the existence of life beyond the physical world.

The common signs of physical mediumship phenomena are as follows:

1. Transfiguration: The spirits face overshadows the medium

Transfiguration occurs when the spirit person overlays an image of themselves over the medium.

In such instances, we can observe a change in the medium’s physical appearance and expression. We may observe changes in facial features, gestures, voice and other physical characteristics which resemble the loved one in spirit.

This phenomena is visible to all that are present, it is not just perceived by the medium. Many mediums believe this type of manifestation is only possible because of a substance called ectoplasm (see below).

2. Ectoplasm: a substance that emanates from the medium’s body

Ectoplasm is a term coined in the Victorian era to describe the mysterious substance that is released from the medium’s body during séances.

It was described as a viscous, milky substance that could take on various forms. It can appear as a cloud, mist, or even a solid form. Transfiguration is often perceived as a light mist overlaying the face of the physical medium.

3. Materialisation: The physical appearance of spirits & objects

Materialisation is the ability of some physical mediums to externally manifest the form of spirits (apparitions) and objects (apports). The spirit communicator works through the medium to physically reveal itself or materialise objects in and around the room.

4. Apparitions: Full or partial appearances of spirit

Apparitions are unexpected appearances or sightings of a spirit communicator. The spirit person can appear partially or as a full-body manifestation. There are many accounts of such phenomena occurring during séances in the 19th and 20th centuries. But spirit can also manifest even without the presence of a physical medium.

5. Apports: Inexplicable appearance of objects

Apport is a term used to mean the mysterious apparition of objects that appear out of nowhere. These are considered gifts from the spirit realm and can include flowers, jewellery or any other meaningful object.

For example, you may receive a coin from a loved one that has your birth year on it, or, you could receive a special gift such as a flower for your wedding anniversary.

6. Levitation: Objects, people, or animals rising off the ground

Levitation is the phenomena whereby a person, animal or object rises off the ground and remains suspended in the air, defining the law of gravity. Although this sounds extraordinary, levitation is frequently discussed in spiritual circles, Hindu Vedic texts and among Buddhist monks.

7. Table tipping: Tables inexplicably move and lift off the ground

Table tipping, also known as table-turning or table levitation, is a physical mediumship phenomena whereby tables and other furniture are perceived to move or tilt without any physical cause.

This activity was common among spiritual gatherings and séances during the mid-nineteenth century and many reported witnessing furniture moving. Most séances traditionally involved placing hands on a table but strong movements were noted even without physical contact.

8. Direct Voice: The spirit person uses their own voice to speak

Direct voice is where the spirit communicator uses their voice to communicate through the medium. This consists of the spirit communicator channelling their own voice through the vocal cords of the medium. But when the voice is quiet or unclear, the medium can use a cone-shaped device called a trumpet to facilitate communication.

Another form of direct voice can occur through the production of ectoplasm. This creates a visible but etheric microphone which acts as a telephone-link between the spirit communicator and the audience. In both cases, the audience recognises their loved ones’ voices, tone and pitch which is distinct from the medium’s voice.

The last type of direct communication is called “independent-voice“. With this form of communication, the spirit person’s voice is not bound to the medium’s physical body or vocal cords. They can directly speak to their loved ones and travel around the room. Most of the time the spirit person positions themselves next to the individual with whom they wish to exchange messages.

9. Scent phenomena: A familiar scent appears out of nowhere

Scent phenomena is another possible occurrence during a physical mediumship session. Here, a scent is triggered by the spirit person without any external source of the odor being present.

When this happens, the audience becomes aware of a particular fragrance or odor which appears out of nowhere. These can include the smell of flowers, baked bread, perfumes, cigarettes, or any other odor connected to the spirit communicator.

10. Sound phenomena: Hearing sounds from the spirit realm

Sound phenomena include the manifestation of voices, singing, laughter, music, and knocking (see spirit rapping below) that originate from the spirit world.

These sounds are a sign of life beyond death and a form of communication. But this phenomena can carry a message within itself. For instance, you could also hear the song you dance to on your joint wedding day. The sounds are audible to everyone present but they cannot be rationally explained.

11. Spirit Rapping & Tapping: communicating through sounds

Spirit rapping is a form of sound phenomena that includes knocking, tapping and thumping sounds to communicate from the spirit realm.

Just like with table tipping, the spirit communicator provides ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers depending on the number of knocks, sounds or thumps. In 1848, the Fox sisters began hearing noises in the family cottage and this ignited the spiritual movement.

12. Spirit lights: Using lights to communicate

Spirit lights are small, luminous flashes of light that hover over people and move around the room during a séance. They are small orbs of light that change colour and can become brighter or dimmer, and switch on and off.

Some believe the colour and intensity of the orbs reflect the soul of the spirit person’s state of consciousness when they left the body. For many, witnessing spirit lights during a séance is considered proof of the presence of spirit.

13. Supernatural healing: Healing channelled from the spirit realm

Supernatural healing can spontaneously occur during a physical mediumship session. The spirit person can use their divine connection to heal an individual or even an entire room of people.

The medium acts as a conduit and allows the divine energy to flow through them to heal the body, mind and soul. This experience does not require the medium to lay hands on those that need healing, the energy flows out into the room and is directed towards those that need healing.

14. Changes in room temperature: Experiencing cold chills

A sudden drop in temperature are sometimes referred to as ‘cold spots’ and are commonplace during séances and demonstrations. But it is also possible to sense “hot spots”.

Many believe sudden fluctuation in room temperature is proof of the spirit communicators’ presence. And although there are many instances of such occurrences science has not been able to provide an alternative or plausible explanation.
