Have you ever experienced an inexplicable chill down your spine, as if someone unseen brushed past you? Or felt a sudden change in room temperature without any logical explanation?

Well these are signs that the spirit world and ours have temporarily aligned.

Common signs of physical mediumship phenomena are transfiguration, ectoplasm, materialization, apparitions, apports, levitation, table tipping, direct voice, scent phenomena, sound phenomena, spirit rapping and tapping, spirit lights, supernatural healing, and changes in room temperature.

Keep reading to learn about these 14 types of physical phenomenon and what you may experience during a physical mediumship seance:

1. Transfiguration

You may see the spirits face overshadows the medium. Transfiguration occurs when the spirit person overlays an image of themselves over the medium. In such instances, we can observe a change in the medium’s physical appearance and expression. We may observe changes in facial features, gestures, voice and other physical characteristics which resemble the loved one in spirit.

This phenomena is visible to all that are present, it is not just perceived by the medium. Many mediums believe this type of manifestation is only possible because of a substance called ectoplasm (see below).

2. Ectoplasm

This is a milky substance that come from the medium’s body. It can appear as a cloud, mist, or even a solid form. It is used by the spirit world to interact with the audience and bring through messages from the afterlife. The spirit person can use the Ectoplasm to reveal their physical appearance, to bring meaningful objects and gifts to their loved ones (see materialisation below).

Ectoplasm is a term coined in the Victorian era to describe the mysterious substance that is released from the medium’s body during séances.

3. Materialisation

: The physical appearance of spirits & objectsMaterialisation is the ability of some physical mediums to externally manifest the form of spirits (apparitions) and objects (apports). The spirit communicator works through the medium to physically reveal itself or materialise objects in and around the room.

4. Apparitions

Spirit people can appear as a partial or full-body body manifestation during a Séance. Although rare nowadays, this type of phenomena frequently occurred during séances in the 19th and 20th centuries.

5. Apports

Apport is a term used to mean the mysterious apparition of objects that appear out of nowhere. These are considered gifts from the spirit realm and can include flowers, jewellery or any other meaningful object. For example, you may receive a coin from a loved one that has your birth year on it, or, you could receive a special gift such as a flower for your wedding anniversary.

6. Levitation

Levitation is the phenomena where a person, animal or object lift of the grounds and remain suspended in the air. Although this sounds extraordinary, levitation is possible and is frequently discussed in spiritual circles, in the Hindu Vedic texts and among Buddhist monks.

7. Table tipping:

Table tipping, also known as table-turning or table levitation, is where tables and other furniture are perceived to move or tilt without any physical cause. This was common among spiritual gatherings and séances during the mid-nineteenth. Most séances traditionally involved placing hands on a table but strong movements were noted even without physical contact.

8. Direct Voice:

Direct voice is where the spirit communicator uses their voice to communicate through the medium. This spirit communicator channels their own voice by using the mediums vocal cords. But when the voice is quiet or unclear, the medium can use a cone-shaped device called a trumpet to facilitate communication.

The spirit world can also communicate directly by using ectoplasm. They create a visible but etheric microphone which acts as a telephone-link between the spirit communicator and the audience. In both cases, the audience recognises their loved ones’ voices, tone and pitch which is distinct from the medium’s voice.

9. Independant Voice

Independent-voice is a form of communication where the spirit person’s voice comes from the room, it is not bound to the medium’s physical body or vocal cords. They can directly speak to their loved ones and travel around the room. Most of the time the spirit person positions themselves next to the individual with whom they wish to exchange messages.

10. Scent phenomena

Smelling a familiar scent appears out of nowhere. It is triggered by the spirit person without any external source of the odor being present. The audience becomes aware of a particular smell such as the scent of flowers, perfume, cigarettes, freshly baked bread, or any other odor connected to the spirit communicator.

11. Sound phenomena

Hearing sounds from the spirit realmSound phenomena include the manifestation of voices, singing, laughter, music, and knocking (see spirit rapping below) that originate from the spirit world.

These sounds are a sign of life beyond death and a form of communication. But this phenomena can carry a message within itself. For instance, you could also hear the song you dance to on your joint wedding day. The sounds are audible to everyone present but they cannot be rationally explained.

12. Spirit Rapping & Tapping: communicating through sounds

Spirit rapping is a form of sound phenomena that includes knocking, tapping and thumping sounds to communicate from the spirit realm.

Just like with table tipping, the spirit communicator provides ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers depending on the number of knocks, sounds or thumps. In 1848, the Fox sisters began hearing noises in the family cottage and this ignited the spiritual movement.

13. Spirit lights: Using lights to communicate

Spirit lights are small, luminous flashes of light that hover over people and move around the room during a séance. They are small orbs of light that change colour and can become brighter or dimmer, and switch on and off.

Some believe the colour and intensity of the orbs reflect the soul of the spirit person’s state of consciousness when they left the body. For many, witnessing spirit lights during a séance is considered proof of the presence of spirit.

14. Supernatural healing: Healing channelled from the spirit realm

Supernatural healing can spontaneously occur during a physical mediumship session. The spirit person can use their divine connection to heal an individual or even an entire room of people.

The medium acts as a conduit and allows the divine energy to flow through them to heal the body, mind and soul. This experience does not require the medium to lay hands on those that need healing, the energy flows out into the room and is directed towards those that need healing.
