Being a medium is an incredibly rewarding career, but it comes with its own set of emotional challenges. So, yes it is important to align our mind, body, and soul so that we can effortlessly communicate with the Spirit World. But we also need to develop emotional resilience too. But as emotional beings, we can end up feeling overwhelmed, not just in our mediumship but in our daily lives too.

But if we want to truly develop as mediums we cannot neglect our emotional wellbeing and must find ways to stay open, grounded, and balanced. It isn’t just helpful, it’s essential if we want to serve the spirit world and the loved ones left behind.

So, in this post, we’ll be exploring the most common reasons why mediums may feel overwhelmed and practical ways that we can build resilience.

1. Getting emotional during the sessions

Mediumship readings can offer clients a safe space to express their emotions whilst connecting with loved ones in the afterlife. But our emotions can also be triggered as we sense intense emoriotns from our client or their loved ones in the spirit world.

So we need to get comfortable with feeling different intensities of emotions in our daily lives so that we can navigate through the intense feelings. Otherwise it can leave you feeling drained, overwhelmed, or even unable to share the loving messages and move forward in the readings. I recommend allow those emotions to move through you and feel into the divine, calm space within. It is an all encompassing space beyond these emotions, that will help you continue sharing messages from loved ones in the afterlife.

2. Facing Criticism and Skepticism

As a medium, we must recognize that not everyone understands mediumship from our perspective. Some people may have fears about mediumship, others may be skeptical about your abilities to communicate and even dismiss that it is indeed possible to speak to loved ones in the afterlife. When this happens it can affect you emotionally and even lead to self-doubt, especially if you are starting out as a medium.

If this does happen, it is important to understand that the other person has their own set of beliefs and these have nothing to do with you. Then focus on all the reasons why you have chosen to do mediumship and be of service to the spirit world.

3. Difficulty Disconnecting After a Session

Not all readings are the same, and some can be super emotionally charged, especially when working with grief, trauma, unresolved conflicts, or guilt. But you do not want to carry these emotions into your personal life. So, whether you are connected to lingering feelings of sadness, anxiety, or even physical exhaustion, you need to nip it in the bud.

That is why we must set aside some time for self-care after each reading. I do this by going for a short walk and grounding my energy at my local park, dancing, having a quick shower, journalling, sitting in power, or doing deep breathing exercises. But you can pick anything that feels right for you. If you prefer visualizing a bubble of white energy around you, or you like to use incense or energy work to clear out the energy field. The choice is entirely yours!

4. Going through Personal challenges

When we’re dealing with personal challenges, like relationship problems, money stress, or health issues, it can affect our mediumship. Our emotions may be weighing us down and can affect our ability to connect and receive messages from the spirit world. So we must develop emotional resilience and learn to separate our personal life from our mediumship work.

The best way that I have found to achieve this, is to ground my energy and be fully present in the moment. This quietens the mind and helps me move into a state of being where I can leave my personal issues to one side. However, I also recommend getting regular healing sessions, seeking support from loved ones, or considering hiring a professional to work through your personal issues.

5. Experiencing self-doubt, worry and fear

As a developing medium, you may experience self-doubt, question your abilities, or worry whether or not they are a good medium. The fear of not being good enough or making mistakes can weigh heavily on you, adding to the emotional pressure and affecting your work. Not only does it cloud our minds, but it also affects our ability to share messages from the afterlife.

The best thing you can do is shift your mindset by remembering that this work isn’t about you….. it’s about the spirit person, their loved ones, and the messages they want to bring through. When you focus on sharing what the spirit wants to say, instead of worrying about how you’re doing, it takes away some of the pressure. All you need to do is share their messages as clearly as possible. Trust that the spirit world will guide you, and the more you focus on helping them communicate, the easier it will be. By focusing on the spirit person’s needs, you can let go of self-doubt and feel more confident in your abilities.

6. Difficulty Setting Limits with Clients

Mediums are often empaths that enjoy helping others and don’t want to disappoint their clients. Because of this, they often have difficulty setting healthy bondaries particularly with highly demanding clients. But going beyond their comfort zone can lead them to feel drained, frustrated, and emotionally overwhelmed.

That is why you must get into the habit of setting our clear expectations from the onset. Communicate your boundaries as part of the introduction, like how long the session will last, what they can expect or what kinds of questions you’re comfortable answering. Remind your clients that you are a messenger, not the one controlling the messages. This can help reduce the emotional pressure and remove unrealistic expectations from the start of the reading. Remember that clear communication avoids misunderstandings benefits everyone and ensures you can continue helping others in a healthy and prolonged way.
